Osprey chick makes maiden flight

One of the Lake District's osprey chicks has made its maiden flight.

The recently-ringed bird is the first of a brood of three hatched in a nest near Bassenthwaite to take to the air.

The Lake District Osprey Project team now hopes that the other two chicks, which are also believed to be female, will soon follow.

Since 2001, 19 chicks have been raised by the osprey pair, which regularly return to the area and have become a big tourist attraction.

Chick number 10 left the nest on Thursday morning and flew some distance away, before returning a few hours later.

The public can see the birds via viewing platforms and a video wall, and the BBC Cumbria website has also set up a live video stream of the nest for the first time.
