Repairs for Victorian reservoir

Traditional masonry techniques are to be used during improvement works to a reservoir in Cumbria.

Pennington Reservoir was built in 1897 to supply water to Ulverston, Dalton-in-Furness and parts of Barrow, and can hold up to 625 million litres of water.

As part of a £2m repair programme by United Utilities there will be a new wave wall.

This will be constructed using Cumbrian stone walling techniques to ensure it blends in with the local scenery.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of August, and in order for it to be carried out safely, engineers will have to lower the water level.

However, some of it will still be open for use by members of Barrow Angling Association.
