First swine flu case for county

A holidaymaker from the US has been confirmed as having Cumbria's first case of swine flu.

The 70-year-old man was staying in the Carlisle area after arriving from elsewhere in the UK and became ill at the weekend.

Public health experts in Cumbria said he was visited by a doctor who took swab tests and prescribed anti-viral medication. He has now left Cumbria.

They said there was no remaining risk of ongoing infection.

An NHS Cumbria spokesman said: "There has been one confirmed case of swine flu in the Carlisle area - a 70-year-old man from the United States who has now left the county.

"The case was reported on 27 June and is the first in Cumbria.

"The man arrived in the Carlisle area from another part of the UK.

"After reporting feeling unwell, the man was visited by a GP who took swab tests and provided anti-viral medication."
