An elderly man who lived alone was robbed by two bogus workmen who called at his house in Cumbria.
The pair gained entry to the property on Tarn Side in Ulverston after they claimed to be fixing leaks for the water board on Monday.
They then stole items including a quantity of premium bonds, commemorative coins, an antique pocket watch, cash and bank books.
Both were described as aged between 30 and 40 and wearing dark clothing.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said it was an "appalling crime".
"This elderly man was targeted by ruthless criminals posing as water board workers."
He reminded the public to check that utilities workers were genuine by demanding to see identification.
