Old camping barn gets roof revamp

A 16th Century Lake District camping barn has been given a new lease of life thanks to a six-month overhaul.

High Gillerthwaite Barn in Ennerdale Valley has reopened to the public with a new roof, donated by the Forestry Commission, and improved facilities.

Local carpenters Brown and Armstrong of Maryport, used five tonnes of green oak from Miterdale Valley to make the roof.

The barn boasts a wood-burning stove, kitchen, bathroom, and sitting room, as well as the space to sleep 14 people.

Gareth Browning, a forester from the Forestry Commission in Ennerdale, said: "It's great that this project used local timber and local skills to improve facilities and the landscape."
