Warning over free security survey

Elderly residents are being warned to be on their guard against firms offering "grossly overpriced" security equipment as part of a home survey.

Trading standards officers say company representatives are sent out to homes after the free survey is offered over the telephone.

If the resident buys the burglar alarm system it could cost them £3,000, with an add-on service agreement.

Homeowners are being advised to seek police advice on home security.

Phil Ashcroft, head of Trading Standards in Cumbria, said, "A high percentage of the householders that these companies reach are the elderly who may be more inclined to feel the need for added security.

"They are vulnerable to hard-sell tactics and may not realise that the equipment that they are offered may be grossly overpriced."
