Cars crash as cows run on to road

A herd of heifers escaped on to a road in Cumbria resulting in three crashes before being recaptured.

The 36 cows ran on to both carriageways of the A591 near Brettargh Holt, near Kendal, on Friday night.

The road was very dark and four people were injured in three separate car collisions with the animals. Three people needed hospital treatment.

Three of the cows died in the crashes. Police and a farmer eventually caught the animals and took them to a field.
