Olympic handover on highest peak

Sir Chris Bonington

Mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington has flown the Olympic flag at the summit of England's highest peak - marking the handover for London 2012.

The 73-year-old was joined on Cumbria's Scafell Pike by fell running legend Joss Naylor, 72, and Maryport distance runner Laura Naylor, 16.

The event was timed to coincide with the Beijing closing ceremony on Sunday.

Communities across the UK are flying the Olympic flag as London takes over host city status.

Mr Bonington, who has lived in Cumbria since 1974, said: "The whole of the world's eyes will be on London in four years time, so we want to kick off our Olympic adventure in style in Cumbria."

He has led and been on 19 Himalayan expeditions, including four to Everest which he climbed at the age of 50.
