Robins make wheelie bin a home

Robins' nest

A family of robins who took up residence in a wheelie bin have been allowed to stay.

A family from Newbiggin, Temple Sowerby in Cumbria contacted Eden Council asking for a second garden waste bin so as not to disturb the birds' nest.

The council was happy to oblige and has provided a replacement bin so the residents can continue gardening.

The birds have been squeezing in to the bin through a gap in the lid and have built a nest of grass.

Some protection

Eden District Council's Chief Executive Kevin Douglas said: "Our recycling officers have delivered a temporary replacement garden waste bin to the property.

"While they were there they lifted the bin lid to take a look and saw one of the parents sitting on a very neat compact nest.

"The lid was propped open a few inches, just enough to allow the adult robins to get in and out to feed their young and also give some protection from predators.

"We've never heard of one of our bins being used in this way before but are very happy to be encouraging wildlife."
