Energy efficient homes called for

Artist's impression of Pow Beck Gardens The search is on to find a developer to transform a patch of redundant industrial land in Whitehaven into a thriving new community.

Regeneration company, West Lakes Renaissance, wants Pow Beck Gardens to boast energy efficient homes and shops.

The new development will be built on 6.7 acres of the Pow Beck Valley.

Developers have until 12 March to express an interest. Their plans must complement Whitehaven's listed, Georgian buildings and houses.

Sports village

Paul Crooks, Whitehaven programme development manager for West Lakes Renaissance, said: "This is an exciting step forward in realising our vision for Pow Beck Valley and will deliver the most efficient and environmentally friendly residential development to take place in West Cumbria.

"We want the area to be a vibrant and inspiring place for people to live and work so it is essential that we find a developer who shares our vision."

The Pow Beck Gardens developer search marks the first major step in the Pow Beck Valley regeneration scheme.

Other projects planned for the 45-acre site include a business park, space for future business development, and the creation of a new sports village.
