Lakes village gets water energy

Beck at site of hydroelectric generator A family-run renewable energy project has begun generating electricity for homes in the Lake District.

The hydro-electric scheme, set up by Jonathan and Sue Hext from Coniston, draws energy from a beck running down the "Old Man" fell above the village.

It was made possible by reinstating existing equipment, which was decommissioned in the 1960s.

The generator will be able to provide power for between 250 and 300 properties, according to Mrs Hext.

She said: "The power goes straight into the grid, but there should be enough to feed all the houses in Coniston.

"We've had number of businesses interested in site and hope it is something that will develop further now.

"We're delighted that we've been able to reinstate something from years ago, but hopefully which can also pay for itself."
