Driver, 91, badly hurt in crash

A 91-year-old driver is in a "very poorly condition" in hospital after a car crash in Cumbria, police have said.

The woman's 92-year-old husband, a passenger in the Ford Ka, is also in Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary, where his condition is serious but stable.

Police said the couple, from Yorkshire, were on the A66 when their car was in collision with a Nissan Micra, near the Braithwaite junction, on Thursday.

A spokesman said the woman was flown to hospital by air ambulance.

The Nissan driver, a 51-year-old man from Dumfries, was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

The road was closed for more than three hours following the crash.
