Body found in search for canoeist

Lune Valley, Cumbria (courtesy of freefoto.com) Police have named an outdoor instructor swept away when his boat capsized in a river in Cumbria.

He was David Thorne, 49, from Talybont-on-Usk in Powys.

Mr Thorne had been in a two-person canoe with a companion on the River Lune near Sedburgh on Wednesday when their vessel overturned.

The other person swam to safety, but Mr Thorne did not resurface. His body was discovered five miles downriver on Thursday and a search was called off.

Mr Thorne was married with two children. Police divers, mountain rescue teams and specialist dog handlers had been called in to help with the search.

Cumbria Police said his body had been found in the river near the village of Barbon.

A statement released on behalf of the family said: "David Thorne was husband to Sue and father of Andrew and Elen.

"He loved the countryside and was an outdoor instructor. It was both his work and his hobby.

"He was much loved by his family, and will be sadly missed by them and his large circle of friends."
