Sub rescuer is honoured with CBE

Rescued Russian crew members

The head of a firm which rescued seven Russian sailors from an ocean floor becomes a CBE in the New Year Honours.

Roger Chapman, of James Fisher Rumic, helped saved the crew when the mini-submarine dropped to 190m (620ft) off the Kamchatka peninsula in 2005.

Other Cumbrians to be honoured include Councillor Ronald Munby, Mayor of Keswick, who is appointed an MBE.

Brian Needham of Alston also becomes an MBE for his services to the Duke of Edinburgh Award and to young people.

Mr Chapman's firm in Dalton-in-Furness operates the remote-controlled Scorpio 45 which is on standby for submarine accidents.

During last year's mission, the Scorpio craft sliced through nets entangling the mini-submarine, which was stranded for three days beneath the Pacific Ocean.

Mr Chapman becomes a Commander of the British Empire for services to shipping.

Youth justice

Mr Munby, who is also the Deputy Mayor of Keswick, has been a councillor for 14 years.

He has also served three terms as the Mayor of Keswick and has been the trustee of Age Concern North West Cumbria for 10 years.

Formerly the managing director of George Fisher Training Co, he also organises the Keswick Victorian Fayre Jazz Festival.

Also honoured are Michael Walker, general engineering manager, for Serco Defence and Aerospace.

He is appointed an MBE for his services to the defence industry as is Daniel O'Connell of Whitehaven for services to youth justice and the community.
