A teenager charged with starting a fire that badly damaged a 900-year-old abbey has been remanded in custody.
The 17-year-old boy, who is not being named, is accused of arson after the blaze at Holme Cultram, St Mary's, in Abbeytown, on Friday.
He appeared before Penrith Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded into custody until Thursday.
St Mary's makes up two thirds of the nave of the former Cistercian abbey founded in 1150 by monks from Melrose.
The roof of St Mary's, which dates from the 17th Century, after a previous fire, was destroyed in the blaze.
As it collapsed it also destroyed much of the interior of the church and vestry.
