Bid to trace mother and daughter

Anna and Mary McCann

Police and a local council say they are concerned for the welfare of a two-year-old girl who went missing with her mother two months ago.

Anna McCann was being cared for by a foster family in Coventry at the time of her disappearance.

Her 43-year-old mother Mary McCann, who has learning difficulties, took her daughter after seeing her on a supervised visit on 15 August.

Police believe the travelling community may be helping her.

Det Ch Insp Basit Javid said: "There haven't been any sightings of Mary or little Anna since they went missing and both police and children's services are extremely worried about their welfare.

'Travelling sites'

"Anna suffers from a severe medical condition and needs to be monitored by medical professionals. We urgently need to find her."

He added: "Mary is from the travelling community and has previously lived on sites in Coventry.

"However, it is possible she is being helped by people within the travelling community and she may no longer be living locally."

Colin Green, director of children's services for Coventry City Council, said both Anna and her mother were "very vulnerable".

The disappearance was featured on BBC One's Crimewatch programme on Monday.
