A man and woman posing as police officers persuaded a 91-year-old man to let them into his Warwickshire home and made off with cash and bank cards.
They told the man, from Newbold, Rugby, on Saturday there had been a burglary nearby and they had to search the property to make sure all was in order.
The woman distracted the elderly man while the man made a search.
The pair also asked to see a wallet and told the elderly man notes in it were fake and they would have to take them.

When they left it was discovered that more cash was missing.
The woman has been described as white, 4ft 6ins tall, slim build and aged about 40. She was wearing a dark jacket and trousers.
The man has been described as white, 6ft tall and having a big build. He was wearing dark trousers and a casual jacket with an open neck shirt.
Police in Nuneaton have been investigating a similar incident which happened in the Attleborough area earlier on Saturday afternoon.
A man and woman pretending to be police officers went to the address but the occupant was suspicious of them and they were not allowed in.
They have been described as a short white female, wearing jeans and a close fitting jacket, and a tall white male who was well built and had an Irish accent.
