Traffic queues at business park

Firms on a Coventry industrial estate want better road access to their offices as they say they often have to queue for 30 minutes at peak times.

The Westwood Business Park's companies include TUI, Barclays and Powergen. Its tenants' association wants to open an emergency access road to ease traffic.

The Chamber of Commerce said it is an old problem but is getting worse.

The city council said it is looking at various solutions, such as the access road, and wants to get something done.

'Discuss costs'

Darren Jones, chairman of the Coventry branch of the Chamber of Commerce, said the traffic could put off potential investors in the city.

"Earlier this year during rush hour one evening it took two hours to get off the site as there was an accident on the A45," he said.

"On a normal day it takes more than half an hour to leave the site."

Councillor David Arrowsmith, responsible for regional planning, said an independent survey showed the access road would have to be made stronger for heavy vehicles and motorists cannot see clearly onto the main road.

"The remedial work would be the costly part," he said.

"There are couple of traffic islands and we have asked for people to look at the possibility of there being another which would benefit all residents not just the business park."

He said a meeting is being held this week to discuss the various options and their costs.
