Sewage plans deadline criticised

Sewage plant

An application to site a sewage works in Cornwall has been criticised for not giving people enough time to give their views on the proposals.

South West Water (SWW) submitted plans to Cornwall County Council for the site at Trevalga or South Bossiney.

But parish councillors at Tintagel, Trevalga and Boscastle said a three-week response time was unreasonable.

Cornwall County Council said it needed to balance giving the time to reply and determining the application.

Dave Hodge, a Tintagel parish councillor, said the material from SWW was "a rather large, thick document with a lot of text, plans and drawings".

'Complicated material'

"It must have taken them a long time to put together and yet we are expected to read and digest the information and submit any objections in a three-week time frame.

"It is very unreasonable for such a short deadline when there is a lot of complicated material to wade through.

"The whole process, as far as we're concerned, has not involved us in consultation and we have not had, therefore, an input into what is going to have a great impact on our community and the communities of Trevalga and Boscastle."

He said the county council has been asked to grant a one-month extension to give people time to thoroughly analyse the proposal.

Tim Horwood, Assistant Director of Spatial Planning at Cornwall County Council, said: "We've got to draw a right balance between giving people a reasonable amount of time and our requirement - to get on and determine, as quickly as we reasonably can, the planning application."
