Operation to rescue Irish sailor

A sailor has been airlifted to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack on board an Irish naval vessel.

Falmouth Coastguard co-ordinated the rescue from LE Niamh about 150 miles south of the Isles of Scilly.

A helicopter from RNAS Culdrose flew the 40-year-old sailor to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. A Nimrod from RAF Kinloss was also involved.

The man, who has not been named, is believed to be in a stable condition in hospital.
