A man has died in a drowning accident off the Cornish coast.

The man, believed to be a 32-year-old from Truro, was pulled unconscious from the water at Perranporth Beach at about 1440 BST on Saturday.

RNLI beach lifeguards and paramedics tried to resuscitate him. He was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro but pronounced dead.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said officers were trying to identify the man and notify his next of kin.

The beach at Perranporth is patrolled by RNLI beach lifeguards during the summer months.

The RNLI said the incident occurred about 300m (330yds) north of the flagged swimming area.
