Fisherman loses thumb in accident

A fisherman has lost a thumb in an accident on a trawler 60 miles (96.5km) off the Isles of Scilly.

The 29-year-old trawlerman from Latvia lost most of his thumb and a lot of blood in the accident.

The incident happened onboard the 21m (68.9ft) Newlyn based trawler the Crystal Sea, just before 1415 BST.

The man was flown to Treliske Hospital by a search and rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall, after the skipper rang Falmouth coastguard.
