Teams search for diabetic man, 78

Charles Barkwill

More than 100 people are now involved in the search for a 78-year-old diabetic man who has been missing from his home in Cornwall since Friday.

Charles Barkwill, who is from Launceston, was last seen at 1100 BST on Friday near the Arch in the town.

He is described as 5ft 2in tall, with short, grey hair and is believed to be wearing a brown coat and tweed cap.

His daughter Diana Hockin said his disappearance was "completely out of character".

'Just waiting'

Cornwall Search and Rescue team and the Dartmoor Rescue Group have been searching for him with police officers, the force helicopter and local volunteers.

Mrs Hockin said: "He is a very independent person but he is insulin-dependent and the longer it goes on the more difficult it gets.

"I'm just waiting for it all to be over."

People living in the town are being asked to check their gardens and outbuildings for any sign on Mr Barkwill, who also has alzheimer's and a speech impediment.
