School plans on show to islanders

Secondary school pupils - generic

The final public consultation on a new multi-million pound school for the Isles of Scilly is taking place.

Last year the government said it would fund up to £9m to build a new Five Islands' school on St Mary's for children aged three to 16.

Six locations were researched, with the preferred option at land next to the Carn Gwaval Primary School at Old Town.

Plans for the school, which should be completed by September 2010 are on display at St Mary's Council Chambers.

Residents on Tresco, St Agnes and St Martin's were shown the plans earlier in the week.

Top performer

The current Five Islands' School has about 260 pupils at its five bases.

St Mary's has a primary and a secondary school, while the off-islands of Tresco, St Agnes and St Martin's have primary sites. The primary sites will continue.

Pupils of secondary school age are offered a place at Mundesley hostel during the week so they do not have to travel to St Mary's by boat every day.

The Isles of Scilly is the top performing local authority in the South West for GCSE results, according to the government's league tables.
