An application to build a new police station in Bodmin has been given planning permission.

North Cornwall District Council planners approved the plans to replace the existing building, which was built more than 30 years ago.

A police spokesman said the new station would be capable of fully utilising all current and emerging technologies.

Construction is expected to begin in the summer, with full occupation of the station before the end of 2009.

Insp Ian Marshall said there had been extensive consultation over the plans with the local community.

Specialist units

"I was very keen to ensure the plans for the new police station would greatly improve public contact, team work and enhance access to specialist police services," he said.

"I am confident that this will be achieved and allow us to improve the service that we provide."

The new three-storey building in Priory Road designed by Stride Treglown will act as a strategic policing hub providing accommodation for neighbourhood and patrol policing, together with specialist units including crime scene investigation and a major crime investigation team.

One of the meeting rooms in the new station will be made available for community use.
