Two found guilty of man's murder

Two Lithuanian men have been found guilty of murdering a 25-year-old Polish father-of-two in Cambridgeshire.

Piotr Bielicki was attacked in the Embankment in Peterborough in September 2008 and died the next day.

Cambridge Crown Court heard he had been set upon after asking for a cigarette lighter and "not saying goodbye".

Ricardas Kozevnikovas, 19, and Erikas Cicenas, 20, both from Peterborough, had denied murder. Augustinas Baltrunas, 20, was cleared of murder.

'Good character'

The court had heard all three denied knowledge of the attack when questioned by detectives.

But Mr Baltrunas had told friends how Mr Bielicki had been set upon after asking for a lighter.

Fibres matching the victim's clothes had been found on Mr Baltrunas's clothing and blood matching Mr Bielicki's had been found on shoes worn by Cicienas and Kozevnikovas.

Cambridgeshire Police thanked the city's Polish community for their co-operation in bringing the killers to justice.

Det Insp Simon Harding said: "Piotr Bielicki was a young man of good character who was living in Peterborough simply to make money which he sent home to support his family.

Unprovoked attack

"On the night of his death he had been enjoying a barbecue with a group of friends."

Det Insp Harding said the violent attack was completely unprovoked.

The court had heard more than 60 injuries were found on Mr Bielicki's body.

In a statement Mr Bielicki's family said: "We would like to thank the police for their meticulous investigation leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the death of our beloved son and father."

Mr Bielicki had moved from his native Poland - where he had studied business management - in 2005 to look for work.
