Final phase of bypass work starts

The final phase of work is due to start on a by-pass in Cambridgeshire scheduled to open in early November.

The new Longstanton bypass will be capable of taking 7,300 cars and lorries a day from the village.

Over Road in the village will be closed between the Ramper Road junction and the new roundabout for four weeks from Monday.

The county council said the closure was vital to build the final section of the bypass across Over Road.

Residents from Over have been advised to follow the current guided busway diversion route via Windmill bridge.

Apology for disruption

People will then be diverted via the newly-constructed northern part of the bypass to Longstanton High Street. Access to Ramper Road will remain open as normal.

Philip Crack, from Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "The new bypass will help relieve congestion from the busy B1050 through Longstanton and will greatly improve the situation for local residents.

"Once the bypass is finished Over Road at Longstanton will be closed permanently near the bypass so traffic will use the new road and not the village.

"We would like to apologise for the short-term inconvenience these works may cause and would like to thank everyone for their patience and ask motorists to drive responsibly when using the diversions."
