A city council is to charge supermarkets for recovering shopping trolleys abandoned in its streets.
Officials in Peterborough are to fine the superstores if their staff have to collect and store the trolleys.
"We believe charging will encourage supermarkets to improve security for their trolleys or provide a better collection system," said a spokesman.
"We envisage footpaths, car parks and watercourses will not continue to be blighted by abandoned trolleys."
