Fall girl's mother dead in cave

Sara Cooper The mother of a seven-year-old British girl who fell from a fifth floor balcony in Majorca has been found dead, police in Spain say.

Sara Cooper, of Foxton, Cambridgeshire, had been missing since the incident at a hotel on Monday.

Her daughter Gianna remains in a stable condition in hospital.

The body of a woman was recovered from a seaside cave in Cala Domingos at about 1645 BST by police searching for Mrs Cooper.

A police spokesman said: "The woman has characteristics corresponding to those of the woman who disappeared.

"Local police were working on the beach and saw a woman floating in a cave.

"She was wearing jeans and a blue shirt. They have taken the body to Palma's forensic institute to be identified.

"Her husband has not yet seen the body.

"At the moment the investigation is open. We are looking at a number of hypotheses. The investigation continues and the case is by no means closed."

Gianna plunged 30ft (10m) at the Hotel Samoa, in Calas de Majorca.

'Excellent care'

Gianna's father Ian Cooper said on Wednesday his daughter's condition was improving.

Earlier, in a statement issued through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Mr Cooper thanked hospital staff for the "excellent care they are giving to my daughter, Gianna, and the support they have given to the family".

He said: "Gianna is now in a stable condition and she continues to improve.

"This is a very difficult time for me and my family."

Mrs Cooper, her husband and three of their children had been staying at the hotel when the accident happened.

It is believed Gianna was found by a member of hotel staff on the office roof.
