Barrett paintings fetch thousands

Syd Barrett painting Ten paintings by Pink Floyd founder member Syd Barrett have raised more than £55,000 at auction.

A stool decorated by Barrett fetched £4,400, and a collection of his art reference books a further £4,000.

The paintings were among the contents of Barrett's home in Cambridge being auctioned following his death in July at the age of 60.

The sale of 77 items raised more than £119,000. Barrett's two bicycles fetched more than £10,000 in total.

An abstract painting by Barrett fetched £6,000, while a landscape called Cambridgeshire fetched £3,800 at the sale in Cambridge.

A cream leather armchair with a stain on the headrest fetched £1,100. And his artificial Christmas tree raised £800.

Auctioneers Cheffins were selling 77 items taken from Barrett's home after his death.

The sale catalogue described Barrett - who quit Pink Floyd in 1968 - as a man with a "total disinterest in materialism".

Within an hour of the sale beginning auctioneers had raised more than £20,000.

Barrett's family say some of the money raised will be used for "educational development" in the art world.
