Lost jet family's tribute to son

The family of an 11-year-old pupil from a Bristol public school who was on the Air France flight which was lost in the Atlantic have paid tribute him.

Robin and Jane Bjoroy's son Alexander was among the 228 passengers on flight AF 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

Alexander was returning to Clifton College after spending half-term with his family.

"Naturally we are deeply upset about the loss of our son under such tragic circumstances," a statement said.

"Our thoughts are also with the families and friends of all those who were on board."

The flight, which left Brazil on Sunday, went missing during an Atlantic storm en route to Paris.

Debris has been spotted 650km (400 miles) off Brazil's coast and navy vessels are converging on the area.

Alexander had been staying with his mother, who was from Penarth, Wales, and his Norwegian father in Rio.

Speaking from his home in Wales, the boy's grandfather William Dougill, 80, said: "He is my only grandson. We are all going to miss him. He was wonderful."

Mr Dougill, who lives in Penarth with wife Joyce, 82, said he had been in regular contact with Alexander's parents hoping for news of flight AF 447.

The couple travelled the world but wanted Alexander to be educated in Britain, he said.

Clifton College governor Alison Streatfield-James said it was an "utter tragedy".

She said: "Children are intelligent, they understand what has happened. All we can do is offer them support in an appropriate way."

Headmaster John Milne said: "Alexander was a well liked and respected boarder who will be sorely missed by his fellow pupils and staff."
