Parking campaigners are targeted

People campaigning for controlled parking in parts of Bristol say they have received threats.

Stephen Perry and wife Suzanne Gardner from Bristol had been distributing leaflets promoting the advantages of the parking restrictions.

Earlier this week they received an e-mail which said "putting your address on the leaflets was very stupid... hope you have a fire proof letterbox."

Police have confirmed they are investigating the e-mail.

"It makes your stomach churn and you feel very vulnerable. It could be anyone threatening us at any time of the day or night," Mrs Gardner said.

Bernard Cooke from the Keep Parking Free campaign group condemned the e-mail. He said he did not know anything about it.

"And I hope no-one I know knew about it. It is simply a matter for the police."

On Monday an attempt to thwart plans to run a pilot scheme for residents' parking in two central areas of Bristol failed.

The city council said its scrutiny committee voted not to modify the plans nor refer them back to its own executive committee.

It means Brandon Hill and Kingsdown will soon have parking restrictions in place.

The areas will have restrictions running from 0800 to 2100, Monday to Saturday with permits costing £30 for the first car for the first three years.
