City's steps become Arts Quarter

Bristol's medieval Christmas Steps area has been officially declared an Arts Quarter.

The steep road and its surroundings have a high concentration of arts and crafts businesses such as potteries, instrument-makers and galleries.

To celebrate its new designation, on Saturday visitors were treated to music performances and demonstrations by artists and sculptors.

The Arts Quarter was officially opened by The Lord Mayor of Bristol.

Historians say the medieval road was originally called Queene Street, but the origins of its yuletide name is not clear.
