Winning design for pier pavilion

The winning design has been chosen for the pier pavilion at Weston-super-Mare which was destroyed by fire in July.

The futuristic new pavilion, which will be lit at night, was designed by Bristol-based architects Angus Meek.

The design was chosen from six shortlisted by the owners of the pier, Kerry and Michelle Michael, after a public consultation.

A planning application will be submitted to North Somerset Council before Christmas.

The owners hope the pavilion will be completed and opened by summer 2010.

Mr Michael said he believed the opening of the new pavilion at Weston-super-Mare would be the biggest boost to a British seaside resort in nearly 100 years.

"Blackpool strung garlands of lights across its seafront in 1912 and changed the face of the British seaside and we believe this design can boost Weston by lengthening the season," he said.

"One of the attractions of the Angus Meek design was the way that it can be illuminated at dusk and in the evening so that the pier can be a centrepiece of the sea front during dull autumn afternoons and winter days."

The Angus Meek proposal was selected as favourite by 59% of the public that expressed a preference.
