Rifles in freedom of Bath parade

The Rifles, the Army's largest infantry regiment, is to receive the freedom of Bath from the city's mayor.

Regular soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, The Rifles will march through the city, led by commanding officer Lt Col Nick Kitson.

Mayor Tim Ball will then present Lt Gen Nick Parker with the freedom scroll, silver bugle and symbol and cap badge of The Rifles.

Members of the Army Cadet Force and Old Comrades will also join the parade.

Starting from Kingston Parade at 1100 BST, 80 Regular soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, The Rifles - and 40 of their Territorial Army counterparts with the 6th Battalion - will march at 140 paces to the minute through the city centre.

Lt Col Mike Motum, of The Rifles, said: "Riflemen truly value the support from our great cities such as Bath, particularly when serving overseas."

The parade route will take cover York Street, Terrace Walk, Orange Grove, Cheap Street, Westgate Street, Monmouth Street, Chapel Road, Queen Square, Gay Street, George Street, Milsom Street, New Bond Street, High Street and Orange Grove.

After the ceremony the regiment will leave for Bristol, where they will also receive the freedom of that city.
