Ecuador crash survivor recovering

Map of crash location

The father of teenager injured in a fatal bus crash in Ecuador has said his daughter is even more determined now to study medicine.

Nicola Cox, 19, from near Bristol, survived the crash on 12 April. Five people died and 14 were injured.

Ms Cox was on a year off after leaving school and has a place to study medicine at Nottingham University.

Her father Matthew said: "She said she is more determined so she could help in situations like [the crash]."

But he said he thought what had happened had yet to really "sink in"

'No regrets'

"She seems fine physically and has been very lucky," he said.

"It was a huge relief to see her and have her back safe and sound. But at the same time, there are other people whose children haven't come back."

Indira Swann, 18, of Berkshire; Lizzie Pincock, 19, of Somerset; Rebecca Logie, 19, of Lancashire; and Emily Sadler, 19, of Hertfordshire, all died in the crash involving a lorry and the students' bus.

Travel company guide Sarah Howard, 26, from Cheshire, was also killed.

The group was more than a fortnight into a 15-week Inca and Amazon trip involving language tuition and volunteer projects.

Mr Cox, of Bradley Stoke, said that he thought the lorry had hit one side of the bus, which had taken the full impact.

"I have no regrets about her going," he added. "She was determined to do something."
