Teenager survives fatal bus crash

Map of crash location

A teenager from South Gloucestershire involved in a fatal bus crash in Ecuador is not badly injured, according to her former headmaster.

Nicola Cox, 19, from Bradley Stoke, survived the crash on Saturday. Five people died and 12 were left injured.

Ms Cox was on a gap year after leaving the Ridings High School in Winterbourne last summer.

Her ex-headteacher, Dr Rob Gibson, has contacted her family who said Nicola hit her head but was not badly hurt.

She has a place at Nottingham University to read medicine this autumn, having passed five A-levels at A grade.

Dr Gibson said it was a "shock" one of the school's former pupils had been involved in the crash.

"We are praying for her safe return and well being," he said.

"Our thoughts are with her parents and those families who have lost their daughters."

Gap-year students Indira Swann, 18, of Berkshire; Lizzie Pincock, 19, of Somerset; Rebecca Logie, 19, of Lancashire; and Emily Sadler, 19, of Hertfordshire; died in the crash.

Travel company guide Sarah Howard, 26, from Cheshire, was also killed.

The group was more than a fortnight into a 15-week Inca and Amazon trip involving language tuition and volunteer projects.
