Railway banks get £300K makeover

For almost three years the fate of the banks has been the subject of a row between South Gloucestershire Council, local residents and Network Rail.

The council complained trees had been cut down before anyone had been consulted on Network Rail's plans.

Detailed talks have now resulted in a plan which all parties are happy with.

Councillor Alan Bracey said: "In June of this year, we learned that Network Rail had changed their minds over previously agreed replanting proposals and were looking to spend only £200,000 on the project.

"This was found unacceptable by local people, the council and myself, but after pressure being applied by Steve Webb MP at Network Rail board level and skilful negotiations involving council officers, myself and Network Rail, agreement has finally been reached."

Residents now have until Christmas to view the final replanting plans on show in the visitor centre at Coalpit Heath.

Work is expected to be complete in February or March 2007.
