Drivers have been warned to expect "severe" delays as road closures are put in place for 12 weeks in Slough.
The council began its latest phase of improvement works in High Street on Monday morning.
Road closures have been put in place between Windsor Road and Church Street and Alpha Street North to The Grove.
The work, which is part of the wider £450m "Heart of Slough" regeneration, will include laying a new road surface using imported granite paving blocks.
The project has also seen two permanent artworks by designer Anne Smyth laid.
'Minimum disruption'
They take the form of two droplet-shaped islands, textured in granite, terrazzo and slate.
The council appealed to drivers and pedestrians to "exercise caution" while the closures were in place.
Councillor James Swindlehurst, commissioner for neighbourhoods and renewal, added: "As with any major revitalisation, there will always be times when diversions will be needed for both foot traffic and vehicles.
"The council has tried very hard to work out a way in which certain roads can be closed whilst making sure disruption is kept to a minimum for users."
Buses will be diverted from Herschel Street and the Grove to avoid the work.
