Stressed pupils 'perform poorly'

Anthony Seldon

The headmaster of an independent school believes children will improve academically if more attention is paid to their general well-being.

Dr Anthony Seldon, master of Wellington College in Crowthorne, Berkshire, will call for a "regime change" in a speech to the Guild of Educators next week.

He has already advocated introducing well-being classes to schools.

"Performance at school suffers because of fatigue, stress, lack of exercise and illness," said Dr Seldon.

He added: "There is considerable evidence now that if children are physically and psychologically healthy they will perform much better at school academically.

"Incidences of depression and other mental and emotional problems are severely jeopardising performance."
