A specialist search and recovery team called to a Buckinghamshire house found the body of a man in a maze of litter tunnels which filled the property.
Gordon Stewart, 74, was discovered at his Broughton home after concerned neighbours called the police.
Officers found his body in a labyrinth of tunnels he had created from what were described as mountains of hoarded litter.
A post-mortem examination showed Mr Stewart died of natural causes.
Thames Valley Police said his home was crammed from floor to ceiling with rubbish, with tunnels running around inside.
Terence Dumpleton, 56, who lives in the same street, described Mr Stewart as "a bit of a hermit".
He said some residents had complained about the state of the property after seeing rodents running around.
A police spokesman said: "Police were called on Friday at 1226 GMT by a member of public who was concerned for welfare of a resident.
"Police forced entry where they found a body of a man. There are no suspicious circumstances."
