Man dies after stolen cars crash

Bedford crash vehicle

A 25-year-old man walking home from a night out died in hospital after being hit when two stolen cars collided and crashed into flats in Bedford.

Police confirmed that the pedestrian was David Gaylor, of Moulton Avenue, where he lived with his family.

Six people have been arrested over the incident in London Road, early on Sunday morning, police said.

Three people were in custody under arrest and three were in hospital, two with serious injuries.

Mr Gaylor's family were too upset to comment, but a next door neighbour, who did not want to be named, described him as a "decent young man".

Structural engineers said the block of flats, owned by Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association, had been left structurally unsound, leaving all residents needing to be rehoused.

A hole was left in a bedroom wall and two flats and a stairwell were severely damaged in the crash, but no residents were injured.

A Bedfordshire Police spokeswoman said: "Six people have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, which involved a Ford S Max and a Hyundai Coupe, both believed to have been stolen overnight from the Bedford area.

"All six had been arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent.

"Three of the people that have been arrested are at Bedford Hospital South Wing, two of them are described as receiving treatment for serious but not life-threatening injuries."

A third was receiving treatment for minor injuries and the other three were being held at Greyfriars police station.

Alternative accommodation

"The collision caused extensive damage to the flats. One resident, who was in bed at the time, had a hole knocked into his bedroom wall," the police spokeswoman said.

"No-one from the flats was injured, but they have been obviously left shocked by what has happened."

Police have closed the road and asked motorists to find an alternative route.

The people who had to leave their homes are being put into alternative temporary accommodation.

Flowers have been laid at the scene paying tribute to Mr Gaylor.

The card on one bunch said: "David, God Bless Mate, we love you so much", while another read: "Can't believe you have gone. Love you so much, you will always be with us."

Sylvia Ruffhead, 78, who lives near the scene said the noise of the crash was so loud she thought it was gunfire.

"I lay in bed and I heard this noise, I thought it was somebody shooting a gun.

"As I went to get out of bed and put my foot down on the carpet I felt the whole building vibrating from where it had hit."
