New white rhino appears in public

White rhino calf A baby white rhino has made his first public appearance with his mother at a Bedfordshire zoo.

The unnamed calf, born on 28 December, weighs about 45-50kg and was born after a 500-day gestation period.

He is the third calf born to mother Nwana and the 54th African white born at Whipsnade Zoo near Dunstable.

The two-horned white is the largest of the five species of rhino. It has a distinctive hump of ligaments on its neck to support the weight of its head.
