Broken road signs sent to prison
Damaged roadwork signs are to be repaired in prison in an initiative to cut resource wastage and save money.
Hertfordshire Highways will send its broken steel temporary signs to The Mount Prison, Bovingdon, near Hemel Hempstead, for a makeover.
Offenders learning metalwork, welding and painting skills as part of a rehabilitation programme will then give them a facelift.
It is hoped inmates will fix about 500 signs each year.
Peter Delves, HM Prison Service business account manager, said: "The aim is to stop them from re-offending by giving them a qualification and if we can re-use hundreds of signs rather than waste them, it's got to be a good thing."
