Lib Dems lose power in St Albans

The Lib Dems have lost control of St Albans District Council which they had taken charge of last year.

They remain the largest party but lost two seats to the Conservatives in the local elections.

The council now has no party in overall control, with 29 Lib Dems, 19 Conservatives, eight Labour members and two others.

The British National Party lost its member on Broxbourne Borough Council as the Tories increased their hold.

The council, where a third of the seats were up for election, now has 36 Conservative members and two Labour.

The Tories held on to South Bedfordshire and gained three seats on Welwyn Hatfield Council at the expense of Labour and the Greens.

Counting suspended

But the Conservatives failed to take any seats from Labour in Stevenage, where it retains its 25 majority.

Three independents lost their seats at Bedford Borough Council and made way for the established parties but with no overall change the council remains hung with the Tories as the largest group.

The Conservatives have also held Hertsmere, with the Lib Dems taking one seat from Labour.

In Milton Keynes, the council remains under no overall control, although the Tories gained two seats - one each from Labour and the Lib Dems.

Three Rivers District Council remains unchanged under Lib Dem control, taking one seat from Labour.

The Liberal Democrats have retained control of Watford Borough Council with an unchanged majority but Labour has taken a seat from an Independent.

South Buckinghamshire has suspended counting due to electronic problems and Luton will continue its count on Friday.

There are also a number of other councils counting on Friday.

They include Bedford, Mid Bedfordshire, Wycombe, East Hertfordshire, Dacorum, North Hertfordshire and the Bedford and Milton Keynes mayoral elections.
