Heavy rain causes traffic misery

Flooded Coast Road

Heavy rain has been causing problems for drivers on roads across the North East of England.

Both lanes of the A1058 Coast Road in Tyneside have been reopened after being closed by flooding, and there are also problems with surface water on the A19.

Roads in the south of County Durham have been badly affected, police said.

The Highways Agency is advising motorists check weather forecasts before heading out, with more downpours expected overnight and in the morning.

The flooding on the Coast Road was on a stretch in Heaton.

There is a flood watch warning in place for the River Gaunless in Bishop Auckland.
