Man denies strangling pensioner

An unemployed Surrey man has denied the murder of a widow who was found strangled in her south London home.

George Maben, 45, from Rosehill, was remanded in custody for trial in October, following his appearance at the Old Bailey on Thursday.

Maureen Cosgrove, 65, lived with family members in a detached house in South Way, Carshalton. Her body was found there on 24 March.

A post-mortem examination found that she died of asphyxia.

Mrs Cosgrove had four children and seven grandchildren and was an active charity fundraiser.
