Teenager dies after police chase

A 17-year-old has died in hospital after being fatally injured in a crash in Surrey during a police pursuit.

Surrey Police said the teenager, who was driving a stolen car, failed to stop in Merton, south London on 8 July.

The force said the driver of the Mazda, which crashed in Lammas Lane, Esher, Surrey, died in Kingston Hospital at about 1720 BST on Wednesday.

The Metropolitan Police has referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Surrey Police said Met officers followed the driver for about 10 miles before he collided with a Daewoo in the early hours of 8 July.

'Impartial investigation'

He was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition all week but died on Wednesday.

The driver and passenger in the Daewoo were also injured in the crash but have been released from hospital.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "The Metropolitan Police has referred the collision to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, as it involved their staff and vehicle.

"A decision is awaited about how the investigation will be formally managed and the IPCC is attending Surrey to assess the situation.

"In the meantime Surrey Police is conducting an impartial investigation."
