Five bid for A11 widening scheme

A11 holiday traffic

Five contractors are bidding to carry out work on the final section of the A11 in Norfolk and Suffolk.

The winner of the contract for a nine-mile (15km) section between Thetford in Norfolk and Five Ways roundabout in Suffolk will be announced in September.

The scheme will cost between £106m and £147m, the Highways Agency said.

A public inquiry is still to take place and, although the date has not yet been set, it is expected to start in the autumn so work can start by late-2010.

The five contractors have teamed up with consultants for the bidding process.

They are Costain/Halcrow, May Gurney/Faber Maunsell, Birse/Mouchel. Sir Robert McAlpine/Atkins, Skanska/URS.
