Giant head celebrates town's work

In Our Image sculpture

A giant artwork in the shape of a human head has been installed at a business park in County Durham.

The 53ft (16m) scaffolding structure, "In Our Image" has been created by sculptor Joseph Hillier to celebrate the North East's industrial heritage.

On Tuesday it was hoisted into place at Newton Aycliffe Business Park.

Its creator said the work is designed to look as if it is under construction to honour the workers who make everyday household goods.

The sculpture includes five laser-cut figures that appear to be working and climbing on the grid of welded steel.

The 35-year-old artist said: "We wanted to make something which celebrated the work which goes on in Newton Aycliffe every day.

"This is a working town, people here make stuff. I'm a sculptor, I make stuff, we have that in common"

He added: "My aim has always been to create a sculpture, which is a beautiful and poignant reflection of the relationship between humanity, technology and matter.

"I also hope the work will find a lasting home amongst the people of Newton Aycliffe and that they enjoy their new sculpture for years to come."

The raised sculpture is in the form of a grid, open at the back to appear as if it is incomplete.

The piece was originally commissioned by Sedgefield Borough Council, but became the responsibility of the county council after the creation of Durham's unitary authority.

County Councillor Neil Foster said: "In Our Image will go a long way to represent the hard work and progress that has been made in regenerating Newton Aycliffe.

"This magnificent landmark not only honours the town's strong industrial heritage but also looks to the future vision of cementing Newton Aycliffe as an industrial force once more."
